See and be seen
To be safe on two wheels, adequate lighting is essential. The reason for this is quite simple: cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users of all. According to the Federal Statistical Office, one in six road traffic fatalities in 2024 was on a bicycle.
Good bicycle lighting therefore not only ensures that you can see the road ahead of you in the dark - it is also your personal shield in road traffic. Because if other road users see you early enough, more serious accidents can often be avoided. If, on the other hand, you are travelling without lights, you are not only risking your head and neck, but also breaking the rules.
But don't worry: you're guaranteed to find the right lights for your bike with us. Whether front or rear light, dynamo or battery-powered, for bikes or e-bikes - you decide the direction, we supply the right light.
Your advantages at a glance:
See better
thanks to uniform light fields that also illuminate the near field directly in front of the front wheel.
Be seen better
due to wider light distribution, brake light function.
Shine for longer
thanks to particularly efficient batteries, dynamos and durable, robust materials.
Just drive off
thanks to effortless installation and simple operation.
Bicycle lights - everything you need to know
There is a lot to know about bicycle lighting: What regulations apply in road traffic? What types of lighting are there? And which ones are best for you? After all, not all lights are the same. We have summarised our expert knowledge from 100 years of bicycle lighting to answer all these questions for you.
Proper bicycle lighting: this is what the regulations look like
The regulations for bicycle lighting can be found in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). These stipulate that lighting components on bicycles must be approved and type-approved. Front and rear lights may be removable. The following lighting components are mandatory:
- One or two front headlights with white low beam, which must not flash. Additional functions such as high beam, daytime running light, and parking light are permitted.
Front lights must be mounted at a height between 40 and 120 cm. - Two front headlights are required for bicycles with a width of one meter or more (e.g., cargo bikes).
- Front headlights and rear lights may be powered by a dynamo, rechargeable battery, battery, or vehicle battery.
- At least one white front reflector is required at the front.
- At least one red rear light, which must not flash. A brake light function is permitted.
- A red (Z) reflector is also required at the rear. This must be mounted at a height between 25 and 120 cm. The (Z) reflector may be integrated or connected to the rear light.
- At least two yellow spoke reflectors offset by 180° on each wheel are also required. Alternatively, white stripes around both tires, rims, or spokes are also permitted. A third option is white reflective spokes or reflective spoke sleeves on each spoke. Each pedal must have a yellow reflector at the front and rear. Bicycle turn signals are now permitted on all bicycles.
If you drive without lights, you pay extra.
Driving on the road without lights is not only dangerous for you and other road users, but can also result in fines.
- Driving without lights or with defective lights can cost you up to 20 euros.
- If you cause a dangerous situation by disregarding the lights, you will be fined 25 euros.
- In the worst case scenario, if you cause an accident or damage to property, you will be fined 35 euros.
That's money well spent if you invest it in proper bicycle lights.
Is your bike light approved?
All lighting components for use in road traffic must have a corresponding approval. You can recognise whether a product is approved by the approval number. This always consists of a wavy line, the letter K and a five-digit number behind it.
It's a good thing that all our lighting solutions are StVZO-certified. And that's not all: they often provide significantly more than the legally prescribed minimum:
Our front lights start at 17 lux and go up to 300 lux with the IQ-XL Highbeam, which illuminates dark country roads as bright as day. Thanks to close-range illumination, you can see what is directly in front of your front wheel and thus react to bumps or small obstacles on the road. Many of our rear lights are also equipped with LineTec, making you much more visible to following vehicles than with conventional rear lights. It is not for nothing that our products in the lighting category have been recognised by the independent German Association for Service and Bicycles (VSF) for the highest quality and sustainability.
Which lighting do you choose?
With so many different types of lighting and models, it's easy to lose track. To make it easier for you to choose the right light, here is a brief introduction to all lighting categories and their special features.
Front lighting
There are basically three types of front lights: Dynamo lights, battery-powered lights and e-bike headlights.
- Dynamo lights are usually permanently mounted on the bike. This means you always have them with you and can't forget them at home. Dynamo headlights do not need to be charged - the power is generated by the dynamo.
Ideal for: Everyday cyclists and touring cyclists - Battery-powered lights are lightweight, flexible and can be fitted in a few simple steps. They can often be conveniently recharged via USB cable.
Our tip: The IXON Rock battery-powered headlight has very good illumination and light duration and was awarded "Test Winner" by Cycling magazine.
Ideal for: Sporty rides and off-road tours - Headlights for e-bikes draw their power from the e-bike battery. As a result, they are significantly more powerful and can be equipped with additional features, such as a cornering or high beam function.
Ideal for: E-bikes and S-pedelecs
Rear lighting
There are also variants of rear lights for dynamo operation, battery operation or for e-bikes.
- Dynamo rear lights are also permanently installed on the bike and draw their power from the dynamo. This enables the use of a brake light function, for example, where the rear light shines brighter as soon as you reduce your speed sharply and suddenly.
- Rechargeable rear lights do not have such additional functions - but they are small, light and can be fitted in a flash. You can also easily charge our battery-powered rear lights using a USB cable.
- E-bike rear lights are also powered by the e-bike battery and therefore shine considerably brighter and longer than other rear lights. E-bike rear lights can also have additional features such as a brake light function.
Reflectors
Reflectors are so-called passive lighting elements that reflect the light falling on them. They are part of the mandatory equipment of a bicycle and ensure that you are better seen by other road users. There are reflectors for the front, rear, sides and wheel spokes.
Tip: Some front and rear lights already have integrated reflectors. In this case, you do not need to fit any additional reflectors at this point.
Indicator
Our TURNTEC bicycle indicator is designed for connection to e-bike batteries with an operating voltage of 10V-48V DC, 2 W at the light output. This makes it easy to change direction at the touch of a finger without having to take your hands off the handlebars. For that extra dose of safety and comfort on the road.
